THE PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE

The Society (IHS) was formed at a public meeting on 25th May, 1983, with Rev. Fr. Stockdale elected first President, Mr. Arthur Treble, Secretary, and Mrs. E. Lea, Treasurer, and became affiliated with the Royal Historical Society of Victoria.

The IHS is also a member of Western Victoria Association of Historical Societies.

The Society obtained tenancy of the Historic Courthouse, which closed in 1983. This magnificent building of red local brick, was built in 1866, and has more than stood the test of time, being in excellent condition some 134 years on, the original furnishings have been retained. In 1993 the building was completely restored inside, being tastefully decorated in it's original colour scheme.

     It was established:

  • To encourage the study of history, especially the history of Inglewood and the surrounding districts
  • To promote the preservation of historical record in all forms

  • To preserve the Inglewood Court House as an historic building and meeting place for members

  • To accept donations of historic documents and artefacts, particularly those pertaining to the history of Inglewood and goldmining

  • To compile and publish books and papers of historical interest

  • To conduct excursions and invite guest speakers to expand members knowledge of the history of the district
  •  To raise funds for the compilation of records and publication of books
